2004년 9월, 부산일보에 한국의 과학상점에 관한 기사가 나오게 됩니다. 그 기사들과 더불어, 여러분들의 선도적 역할과 공개적인 활동을 통해 참터가 한국과학상점 운동에 촉매가 될 수 있기를 기원합니다. 또한 한국 내에서 처음 시작한 과학상점인 참터가 한국 내 과학상점의 바람을 일으킬 진원지가 되기를 바랍니다. 아시아에서도 거의 최초로 시작되는 과학상점인만큼, 향후 아시아 지역 내에서 중추적인 역할을 할 것으로 믿습니다. 비록 과학상점 네트워크를 통한 교류가 과학과 사회 영역에서 큰 역할을 하겠지만, 과학상점의 핵심적인 활동이란 "시민사회가 겪고 있는 여러 문제들에 관해 독립적인 참여연구를 제공"하는 것임을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

저는 조만간 시민참여연구센터가 자신의 활동과 그 조직적 모델을 국제과학상점네트워크의 회원들에게 공개할 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다. 또한 2005년 2월 초 스페인 세빌랴에서 열리는 제2회 '생동하는 지식' 회의에 여러분의 활동을 발표할 수 있기를 기원합니다. 국제과학상점 네트워크를 통해 서로 많이 배울 수 있었으면 좋겠고, 또한 협력을 통한 많은 결실도 기대하겠습니다.

Congratulations with the opening of the opening of the Daejon Science Shop. It's very good news coming from South-Korea. As co-ordinator of the International science shop network Living Knowledge and chair of the Dutch science shop network I'am very pleased to see the contact we had the last few years have been developed in a South Korean science shop. I already noticed a growing interest in the science shop concept in South Korea.

In August or September 2004 there will be an article published on science shops in the Busan Ilbo. I hope your initiative and the publicity it generates as well as the general article on science shops might be a catalyst for the Korean science shop movement. As one of the first South Korean initiatives I hope the Daejon science shop can be seen as a national trend setter. Therefore the Deajon science shop is recognized as the South Korean national contact point of the international science shop network. Because your science shop is one of the first science shop initiatives in Asia that have grown into a science shop I think you will have an important regional function as well. Although networking of science shops is important to create a critical mass on this aspect of science and society please do not forget the core activities of a science shop: providing independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society.

I hope in the near future your science shop can show the members of the international science shop network some examples of your activities and model that you have chosen for your organization. I hope you will be in the opportunity to present your new initiative at the second Living Knowledge conference in Seville, Spain (February 3-5, 2005).

I wish you and your colleagues all the best with your new science shop. I'm sure we can l;earn a lot form each other and I and hope we will have a fruitful co-operation in the international science shop network.
